"In Utopia, where every man has a right to everything, they all know that if care is taken to keep the public stores full, no private man can want anything; for among them there is no unequal distribution, so that no man is poor, none in necessity; and though no man has anything, yet they are all rich; for what can make a man so rich as to lead a serene and cheerful life, free from anxieties.~ Sir Thomas More

The Search for a Better World

On dark roads all over the world people wander. Their feet trudge towards their next encounter with world. Their wheels roll past farms and towns - the landscape, and life it contains, is a blur. As dawn breaks the joyful, the tragic and the mundane impress themselves on their lives again.

"No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; ...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” ~ John Donne, English Poet

But, whatever our station in life, whether queen or peasant, prince or soldier, doctor or farmer, and whether our lives have been blessed with joy or plagued by tragedy, our human souls universally yearn for a better world.

"Imagine all the people living life in peace.

You may say I'm a dreamer,

but I'm not the only one.

I hope someday you'll join us,

and the world will be as one."

~John Lennon

In this, your final project in the Digital Safari, you will explore this millennia-old search for Utopia. Through a variety of activities ranging from reading and responding to the words of those who have come before, to simulating the creation of your own Utopia, to creating your own artistic statement about the worlds we strive for, you will perhaps come closer to your own discovery of what this ancient quest for a better world means in your own life.

“Eager souls, mystics and revolutionaries, may propose to refashion the world in accordance with their dreams; but evil remains, and so long as it lurks in the secret places of the heart, utopia is only the shadow of a dream” ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

So, with that, let's begin our last journey together. Take risks. Inspire each other. See and connect with the world. Attempt to turn our small world into the Utopia we wish for elsewhere.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." ~ Mohandas Ghandi
